The Kosovo Force (KFOR) is a NATO-led international peacekeeping mission that entered Kosovo on 12 June 1999, following the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. Established under the Kumanovo Agreement, KFOR’s primary goal is to create a secure environment and ensure freedom of movement for all citizens of Kosovo, regardless of ethnicity.
Beyond peacekeeping, KFOR personnel also played a key role in investigating atrocities committed during the Kosovo War. Initially planned as a short-term mission, KFOR remains active in Kosovo today. At its peak, KFOR had 50,000 troops stationed in the region, a number that has since decreased to around 4,000 as stability in Kosovo has improved.
